Web Development

After working in web development for the last 8 years for large and small projects, and have tried to stay true to certain methods when dealing with the hundred's of the project I have completed. I began developing small sites in 1999 while I was working as a Network Administrator and switched to full time web development and design in 2001. I have always maintained a strong focus on freelance projects since I have personally found this to be the most efficient way to stay ahead of the curve.

Here is a just sample of the wide scope of projects I have worked on:

  • Large Sites [500+ pages] built within CMS Framework
  • Customer Controlled Ajax Business Forms the update in real time
  • Site re-branded, rescaled, and constructed to major web identity [100 to 3,500 pages]
  • Massive Flash Promotional Site with six levels of zooming virtual reality
  • Over a hundred online banking sites for small and large customers

PHP

I have been programming in PHP since 2002 for my full time employers as well as many freelance projects. Over the years I have found PHP to be an extremely flexible language when integrating with various elements. PHP 5 has proven to ship with improvements in parsing XML for quick integration with various API's. I have also traditionally utilized PHP when interacting with data from Flash and other components and databases. In all my Ajax projects, PHP has been the only language I have used when setting the logic and controllers when changing information based on customers variables. I have used various frameworks depending on the specific need, such as Zend and have recently been impressed by CakePHP's MVC patterns.

Actionscript

My journey in programming Actionscript for Flash began with Actionscript 2.0 and now I spend a healthy amount of time coding with Actionscript 3.0 improvements and focus on object oriented ideals. I have found that when used properly, Actionscript can be used to create surreal virtual environments and an important marketing tool. I coded and constructed massive multi-level sites completely in flash, banner advertisements, marketing lead applications, and user friendly flash games. I am eagerly looking forward to integrating the same principles in Adobe Flex 2 applications for some upcoming marketing projects.

CMS

Content Management Systems have definitely been a favorite tool of mine over the last 4 years. I have used CMS frameworks in many scenarios and found that they can be extremely useful when concentrating on keeping maintenance hours manageable. The I have built several large sites on the Mambo and Joomla and prefer to write my own custom modules and components to fit the customers needs. I have used MODx for smaller sites and can be extremely useful when integrating Ajax frameworks and keeping cleaner CSS environments.

Ajax

Ajax hit the scene a couple of years ago, and in my opinion has lived up to the hype. When using it's functionality unobtrusively, it can provide the user with a more engaging experiencing while incorporating various DHTML elements. I have used Javascript frameworks such as jQuery to keep elements organized as well as properly documented and supported when using Ajax calls. The speed and dynamic loading of properly structured Ajax methods have been used my small form validations techniques as well as big enrollment applications responsible for collecting massive amounts of data.

XML

After working with XML over the last 3 years, I cannot imagine completing certain projects without it. I have used XML and XSLT to build multiple CMS driven for banking websites. In multiple projects, I also regularly used XML to structure data when integrating information into Flash. XML will keep growing in popularity as more API's are standardized and opened to the public.

CSS

I have been involved heavily with CSS since 2000 and would consider CSS based design one of my biggest strengths. I have been coding strictly tableless, compliant CSS sites on thousands of dynamic and static pages for a while now. The projects have covered a wide spectrum of customers from involved business oriented data display to artistically inclined promotional micro-sites pages. Alot of projects have involved converting entire sites to correct CSS based design and browser based CSS adjustments.

Javascript

The necessity of Javascript has been a constant with many projects goals for myself since 2001 primarily on validation and custom tools for form elements. The recent trends towards Javascript libraries has provided a new ease of functionality and animations. I have enjoyed using both the jQuery and Script.aculo.us libraries for multiple purposes including transition animation, photo galleries, field validation, Ajax calls, and DOM manipulation.

XHTML

After developing hundreds of web projects since 1999, I enjoyed seeing the positive shift towards web standards and usability for all everyone. Every web project that I am involved in starts and ends with a foundation of XHTML 1.1 & CSS compliance. Each QA process is dictated on W3C recommendations, Section 508 considerations, and the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI). Adhering to web standards is always one of the most important starting points since browser compatibility and user experience is the goal of every project.

Other

Here is a quick list of other various scaled projects that I have worked on that required working outside my primary core skills.

  • Integration of ASP.Net 2.0 and Flash data
  • MySQL Development, Integration, and Maintenance in PHP 4 & 5 environment
  • ASP.Net 2.0 custom CMS Maintenance
  • Miva Store Development and Administration
